Changing agents is a filing, not a subscription switch, and several states publish the change forms on the same site as the search.

A commercial registered agent is a company that accepts service of process at a street address in the state, forwards it to you, and keeps its own listing current with the register; Montana's register, for example, maintains an official list of commercial agents, quoted in the table. What you are buying is a reliable street address, scanning and forwarding, and compliance reminders.

You can usually be your own agent if you have a street address in the state and are available in business hours; the trade-offs are privacy (your address goes on the public record) and coverage (a missed lawsuit delivery is a default judgment risk).
