How to use the state pages

Go to your state's page and use the official search link at the top; every link goes to a government website, never a reseller. The page tells you which office runs the register (it is not always the Secretary of State: Maryland's register is run by the Department of Assessments and Taxation, Wisconsin's by the Department of Financial Institutions, Arizona's by the Corporation Commission), and what the search returns.

Names differ by state: the same lookup is called a business entity search, a corporation search, a business lookup or an entity search depending on the jurisdiction. The state pages fold those variants together, and the facts table carries the register's own words for what it provides.

For anything the search page does not answer (certified copies, certificates of good standing, historical filings), the state pages quote the official fee where the source publishes one, and link the official ordering route where verified.

Questions people ask

Are state business entity searches free?
The search itself is free in the jurisdictions we verified; South Dakota's register says its records 'can be searched, viewed and printed using this search tool for free', and Delaware's spells out exactly which fields come free of charge. Certified documents are where fees appear, and those are quoted per state where published.
Which office runs my state's register?
Usually the Secretary of State, but not always: Arizona uses its Corporation Commission, Maryland its Department of Assessments and Taxation, Wisconsin its Department of Financial Institutions, Virginia its State Corporation Commission, and Texas splits duties between the Secretary of State and the Comptroller. Each state page names the office and links its official site.
Why is a state missing from this list?
A state appears only once we have verified facts from an official government source for it. A register we cannot yet verify is left out rather than filled with unverified copy, and it joins the index when the verification lands.
